NEW - JULY 2015: ONE STEP TO A STORY
After five decades of studying and writing fiction, my best lightbulb moment is this:
The backbone of any story is:
• A PERSONALITY WITH A PURPOSE •
This may seem incredibly obvious if you're a fan of The Hero's Journey and/or The Writer's Journey, but for years I tried to implement the cornucopia of advice from teachers and famous authors. Meanwhile I usually missed the most compelling element of a story, namely, an individual trying to solve a problem. Plots are interchangeable, but the emotions of the character trying to survive a challenge are more important.
This is my truth. Yours may be different. Freedom of creativity trumps all.
May the Muse be with you!
